biography

The Hightowers were, as far as most were concerned, of no consequence.

Augustus Hightower was a doctor, and there would have been little else to him weren't he the royal doctor. That was how he was introduced to Elizabeth Sweetwood, a dressmaker for the Queen herself. Those with a certain fondness for the Hightowers often spoke of it as being love at first sight, one of the purest relationships to happen in court.

Two beloved servants, their union was encouraged and watched with great interest by their sponsors, and out of this union, after many years of trying, a young girl was born. Lyra Hightower was not destined for greatness. She was expected to marry another servant, perhaps a doctor as well, and that was all that could be said for her prospects at birth.

But fate is a cruel thing. Elizabeth was not strong enough to survive the sickness that struck her when her child was four. Out of pity for the young family, and curious as to the signs of great intelligence Lyra displayed, the Queen offered her a place to study among the children of the great nobles of the kingdom, including the young princess. That, more than anything, sealed Lyra's fate.

Nobody could tell how it started, only that it was already in motion. Lyra and the princess were inseparable, and while at first it was endearing, it began to worry those who coveted for power that a nobody would have the princess' favour over them. But nothing seemed to separate them, or embitter Lyra, who remained the sweet and clever girl she'd ever been till the day Willow rose to the throne.

Then, the courtier's greatest fears were confirmed. Then, she was no longer the sweet friend of the princess, or her "pet", as some would condescendingly call her when they believed she could not hear; No, Lyra, instead of being the princess' friend, Lyra was now the Queen's most trusted advisor.

Crossing her became unwise, and yet unheard of, for power corrupts many hearts, but it seemed as though this air fairy's had been untouched by it. Never harboring resentment, never cold or lacking kindness, she was a great favourite among the palace inhabitants, yet received no shortage of glares and thinly veiled insults from the very people with whom she'd grown up.

But still she stays, strong, savy and smart, by the Queen's side. And there she shall remain, fate will it.
